Track Accounts Through/Crack Email

Not sure where the first part would fit so just paired it here.
Looking for information/tips on how to crack into known email addresses and possibly use email addresses to find associated accounts.
For the second part, I know background checking tools exist, but they are disappointingly hit-or-miss. Was hoping for a better solution from a more reliable group.
